Mentoring

Mentoring is a key component of the Center on Better Health and Life for Underserved Populations.  We mentor undergraduate students through doctoral level junior investigators through courses and through experiential opportunities in research and community engagement.  Below are two mentoring programs provided through the Center.

BHL Research Internships

The internship includes an entry level observation and participation course where students have opportunities to learn the process and get involved in community health research.  An advanced level-course is possible where students complete an original research project and prepare a paper suitable for publication.  The internship can lead to further volunteer opportunities and paid positions in the Center.

Mentoring Multicultural Students for the Health Professions (MEMS)

This program, originally established in 1993 in the College of Human Sciences, provides students with experiences in professional development and engagement with health professionals.  Over 150 students have completed MEMS which have resulted in professional school placements and employment.  Below are selected placements of MEMS alumni.
